This Wednesday, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) celebrated its 10th anniversary and the International Day for Disaster Reduction. At Geneva's celebration it was engagement from the private sector that really highlighted the success of the strategy group.

UNISDR is a strategic framework whose mission is to connect partners from all sectors and convince stakeholders of the merit of disaster preparedness. This year, 2010, has seen some 255 million people affected by natural disasters – in Haiti, Chile, Pakistan…– emphasizing the importance of ensuring the relevant infrastructures are in place to deal with this. On October 13th UNISDR celebrated the 10th anniversary of its formation at the same time as this year’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

A cocktail reception was held at Museum Ariana in Geneva to celebrate. messaggio were heavily involved in this event. otjiwarongo consulting were part of the planning process and provided editorial input. A slideshow produced by messaggio studios was unveiled at the event. The slideshow, which highlights key disaster risks and calls on people to reduce risks in their cities, will be used as a key communication tool in UNISDR’s ‘Making cities resilient’ campaign. messaggio studios’ audio-visual team also filmed the event; soundbites will be available as podcasts on the 'Making cities resilient' website soon.

Speeches from leaders of a range of organisations demonstrated the broad reach and importance of the prevention work that the ISDR drives and coordinates. But the real key to the event was the engagement of the private sector. By presenting their involvement in risk reduction, they highlighted the fantastic steps that ISDR have taken in encouraging private and public interest sectors to deal with the risks of disasters together.
