February 2nd marks World Wetlands Day. For the second time, messaggio studios are proud to have designed the visual identity of this international day, in this year which also marking the 40th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention, and the  International Year of Forests.

Wetlands are amongst the most productive ecosystems in the world. An immense variety of species of microbes, plants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and mammals belong to this ecosystem, that provides crucial habitats and food. But this biodiversity is threatened by human activity.

For the 2011 campaign, the theme is «Wetlands and Forests», chosen because 2011 is the UN International Year of Forests. The Convention entrusted messaggio studios team to provide the campaign’s material in English, Spanish and French: posters, stickers, brochures and a hands-on activity for children.

“Deforestation is pulling the plug on life: that’s the idea we came up with,” messaggio studios’ Art Director Florence Castaing tells us. “The visual gets straight to the point, showing the dramatic consequences of unsustainable human activity on biodiversity”.

The Ramsar team offer to send the design files so people around the world can customize and print all the materials, helping spread the message.

The Convention on wetlands is an intergovernmental treaty adopted on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The objective is to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands’ key ecological processes. We do hope we played a part in achieving this goal.
