‘Step Up’ to reduce the risk of disaster

‘Step Up’ to reduce the risk of disaster

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is an annually designated day to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction, mobilize support for it and showcase how communities and social groups are taking action to reduce their risk to disasters and build resilience. It takes place on October 13th and in 2011-2012, the spotlight is on children and young people!

Repeatedly portrayed as victims of disaster and climate change, children and young people can and should be encouraged to participate in disaster risk reduction and decision making. UNISDR in partnership with Children in a Changing Climate (Plan International, Save the Children, UNICEF and World Vision,) is calling on people to sign the Children’s Charter to create momentum and demand needed to help children and young people to ‘step up’ as partners in DRR.

Hippos and surfboards promote tourism in wetlands.

Wetlands and their wildlife are a key part of the global tourism experience: from visiting the underground karst wetlands in Slovenia’s Skocjan caves, to experiencing the breath-taking sunsets at the Port Launay Ramsar Site in the Seychelles, the world’s Ramsar Sites and other wetlands have much to offer the adventurous tourist.

With half of international tourists traveling to wetlands of all types, but particularly in coastal areas, the tourism expenditure linked to wetlands is significant. Globally, the economic activity generated by travel and tourism represents around 5% of GDP and an estimated 6-7% of the world’s jobs. But of course poorly managed tourism can have negative impacts on wetland resources and local livelihoods.

This years World Wetlands Day 2012 draws attention to the need for responsible tourism to support wetlands and people. The Ramsar Convention, whose objective is to ensure the conservation and wise use of wetlands’ key ecological processes, coordinates the day, and they chose messaggio to create an engaging visual to promote this important issue.

The substantial increase in resources dedicated to health through development assistance and other sources in the last ten years is changing the trajectory of AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, as well as other health problems in low- and middle-income countries.

Much more remains to be done, but there are signs of a dramatic turnaround in the fight against these devastating diseases. New HIV infections are declining in many of the countries most affected by the epidemic. More and more countries are in a position to target the elimination of malaria from their territories. The world is on course to halve TB mortality by 2015 in comparison with 1990.

Since its inception in 2002, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has been one of the major engines driving this remarkable progress.

Soon after its founding, the Global Fund became the main financier in global health. It channels two-thirds of the international financing provided to fight TB and malaria, and a fifth of the international financing against AIDS.

Unity and celebration in ICEM's congress logo

The ICEM’s fifth and last ordinary Congress took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in November 2011, with some 800 delegates and guests in attendance. General Secretary Manfred Warda said Argentina was chosen as the venue for this Congress because of eight strong affiliates in the South American nation, including those affiliated to both national labour centres.

“With industrial trade union unity taking shape on the global level, we felt it appropriate that our union affiliates... connect and continue pushing forward on the positive social agenda that has taken root in Argentina,” said Warda.

A key topic of discussion at the congress was the final integration steps in creating a new Global Union Federation together with the International Textile, Garment, Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF) and the International Metalworkers’ Federation (IMF), which is scheduled to go ahead in June 2012.
